Willie...

November 19th, 2004...my Mother and I will always remember that day, as it's the day we adopted the cutest little scruffy Maltese Terrier Mix named Willie from Zara's List. He has not only melted his way into our hearts, but all our friends and family too! We were looking for close to 1 year for the perfect dog for our lifestyle and home, and we wanted to make sure we could rescue a dog from a shelter or organization like Zara's List. After checking the internet on and off for months, there he was...Willie boy - a.k.a. Poochinelli! Yes, we are Italian in case you didn't already guess.
Christmas was fantastic this year...the first year in our new home, and the addition of a beloved dog who is a part of our family. I would highly recommend Zara's List...Tera and her volunteers are wonderful and the animals they save just need a second chance and a good loving home. We may be looking for a buddy for Willie sometime in the future, and I guarantee we won't have to look anywhere else but Zara's List.
Joette M. PlatenakTera's NOTE:
Willie was listed as a vicious dog at the Baldwin Park Animal Shelter and therefore unadoptable to the public but available to rescue. What he truly was, was scared out of his mind and intimidated by shelter folks who often are pulling and yanking and shuffling dog roughly. I went into his cage and he stayed about 5 feet away from me for about 10 minutes. Finally the lure of a treat was too much. He took the treat and raced to the corner. Then slowly came back to get more. Within about 15 minutes he was in my lap. He came home with me that day and we went through more adjustment at home. When I brought him to introduce him to his potential family I explained that he would need adjustment time and they should not have high expectations right away. I cautioned that he could be nippy if overwhelmed and that they should probably leave his leash on until he felt completely comfortable with them. I slowly opened the crate so as not to scare him and he BOUNDED out and jumped right into their laps. He made an absolute liar out of me and thank heavens these folks realized I was not some nutcase but was rather just relaying my experience with him. It was love at first site and before I knew it he was on his back with his legs in the air just wheeling away as they scratched his tummy. This little boy who was once unadoptable became adoptable in the right hands -- his new parents. When it was time to leave Willie pranced out of that store never even looking back....
