27 Feb 2007Dear Tera,
We wanted to update you on Abie and Reese.

Reese
Reese is now approximately 2 1/2
years old. When she first came to live with us in November 2005 she was
extremely anxious and seemed traumatized. We ended up consulting with a
trainer and the vet and decided to medicate Reese for a short period until
she had a chance to get used to her new environment and we had a chance to
train her. I discovered through blood work that Reese had thyroid problems
and needed some minor daily medication for it. After a short period of
about 4-6 months on anxiety medication along with working with Reese on
training and plenty of love and attention she has become the most loving,
gentle, happy dog we could have wished for. She continues now on the
thyroid meds only and is doing great. Before she was so anxious she would
have panic attacks that would result in her getting so out of control that
you could not calm her down. She definitely seems to have been struck at
some time around the head because she has some fears that both we have
noticed and the vet has commented on. This is most likely the root of her
extreme fear when she relocated to our home.
The point of telling Reeses story is to express that
this beautiful dog could have been given up on so easily. She was taken by
Zara's list from the Hesperia pound a day before she was due to be
destroyed. I happened to adopt her a few weeks later. If I had decided to
make a different choice when faced with Reeses problems then we would not
have the wonderful addition to our family that we have today.

Abie
We decided after such a
great experience with Reese and the belief that it would be healthy for
her to have a companion that we would add a new family member. September
2006 we adopted Abie. Abie had come to Zara's list with her 12 puppies!!
She is no more than a puppy herself really. She is a real sweetheart and
she and Reese fell for each other the day that they met. By the end of the
first day we found them cuddled up on the floor together and knew that we
had made the right choice.
Thank you Tera and Zara's list for all that you do!
