Prima...

My friends always said, "If I were a dog, I'd want to be YOUR dog." Having just lost a dog I had rescued three years earlier to kidney failure, I was hesitant to put myself in another position to feel that kind of grief again. But, I decided not to be selfish. There was another dog out there that needed a good home. So, I turned to the internet. I inquired about quite a few dogs, just to find they had already been adopted.
Then, there she was -- Prima. She was so tiny and cute. I'd pretty much figured she would already be adopted too, but decided to check anyway. To my surprise, she wasn't, and Tera McCurry at Zara's List, decided Prima and I were a good fit. I arranged to pick her up the following Saturday. What have I done? Did I make a mistake?
I was nervous and excited about bringing a little stranger into my home again. My friends went with me so Prima and I could bond on the trip back to San Diego. She whined the whole way home. What have I done? Did I make a mistake?
When we finally got to my house, Prima stayed near me the entire time. Of course, all my friends wanted to come and meet her. She was so shy and quiet. Then she got comfortable. She decided it was her job to protect me. She'd snap and lunge at all my friends. "Great. I've got an ankle biter," I thought to myself. Taking her for a walk was a whole different story. Prima had come from an abusive situation where children and dogs had basically tortured her, so she wasn't very fond of children and other dogs. What have I done? Did I make a mistake?
Realizing this whole thing was going to take time and patience, my friends all came to my aid and helped me to get Prima used to the fact that not everyone was out to hurt her. They'd come over and ignore her. After awhile, I guess she realized it was more fun to get kissed and petted than ignored. Now you can't keep her out of people's laps! She loves to lick and lick and lick. Don't get me wrong, she still doesn't like kids or other dogs, but we know that and keep our distance. All the kids in the neighborhood call her the "Tasmanian Devil" and stay away.
What have I done? I've done a good thing for a dog who needed love and attention. I've got the happiest dog who makes me even happier. Did I make a mistake? The mistake would've been to be selfish and NOT have adopted her!

Just to let you know . . .
. . . that Prima is still my sweet princess (I'm the Queen) and one of the best things to have happened to me. It was always a priority that, if I had a man in my life, he had to be an animal lover and too many of them fell short of that goal. I've always trusted my animals to be a good judge of the men I dated, and Prima and I have found a good one. He loves her and she loves him (of course she loves me more). I think he's a keeper.
At one time I also mentioned to you that a friend adopted a dog because she read the Success Stories on you website and was inspired. You'll be happy to know her dog, who needed so much attention from the beginning because of her abusive background, is now on track to become a therapy dog.
Will wonders never cease. Thanks for all you do.

In San Diego, at Petco Park where the Padres
play, they have a Jumbotron (the big screen) where they ask people to
submit pictures of their pets in Padres gear. This is what I'm
submitting. After a few e-mails, it was sent directly to the guy who
runs the Jumbotron. I have a feeling this will be one of them that they
pick. I can just hear the whole ballpark now saying, "Ahhhhhh."
Her "Dad" and I are officially engaged and
will be getting married next year. I love to see her cuddled up with
him on the couch keeping an eye on me while I'm making dinner. I'll be
sure to send you a picture of that too. She's still the love of my life
and I count my blessings every day for having her with me.

Prima is still our little girl and we love her so much. Except
for flea allergies (for which she gets regular shots), she's happy and
healthy.

With Jim and I getting married, Prima has been officially adopted by her new
Dad! Here's a picture
of her with us in our wedding attire (my friend who was taking care of her
brought her down so she
could be in the pictures). Isn't she still so cute?
