They stood, staring and pointing. Some young kids were even laughing. Some adults covered their mouth in horror. He laid on the cold cement, each one of his ribs showing clearly, his tooth pick legs sticking out, his head hanging to the side because he was too weak to even lift his head. It was clear he was dying in the cage. A kennel attendant was sought to place him in a quieter area where he could die in peace. Clearly he wasn't going to make it. He wasn't allowed to go home for another day, but we all had doubts he'd still be alive then...But, the Chihuahua Doctor had him in her sites. She spent a restless night, worrying about him. Worried he wouldn't be alive the next day when she could take him home and at least give him a chance at living...She was determined to make sure he didn't die a death of indignity. If he didn't have it in him, at least he should die with someone who showed him love, compassion and kindness. He should die in the warmth of someone's arms and not on a cold cement floor, with howling dogs all around and a cage mate ready to attack at any second. At least his last memories would be filled with love, if only he would live those short12 hours...

And, live he did because had the will to survive because he was given....a....CHANCE! Our Chance had pneumonia and a bacterial infection and was so emaciated he couldn't stand. That night he was given proper meds and placed in a warm steam vaporizer tent area where he spent a lot of time recovering those first few days. Thank heavens for the teamwork of Chihuahua Doctor Karen and our DVM, Dr. Bart. With their joint effort he is living.

Seems we found him just in time. He is showing signs of terrible neglect and verbal abuse by his previous human owner. But, now he’s in a loving foster home environment that is committed to his recovery and he shows great signs of recovery. He’s eating good and putting on weight, and is learning how to play with toys and his foster brothers and sisters. This little guy doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He is very loving, sweet, and likes to be held and cuddled. He will be on meds and a special diet for a while but will eventually be fine.

When we first took Chance to the Vet he weighed in at barely 4-1/2 lbs. His normal weigh should be 7 to 9 lbs. So he was approximately ½ his normal weight. That’s like an adult human that should weigh 150 lbs. weighing 75lbs. He is slowly gaining weight and will be available for adoption near Christmas time. Chance may make an appearance at adoptions once he is feeling better. In the meanwhile, we will accept applications from loving, committed families that want to take in this beautiful boy and give him his permanent Chance at a home. Once we have a match, will make an appointment to meet with Chance’s future family!
Chance Update:  December 6, 2006:

Chance is doing better and is enjoying spending time with his foster family. He's eating well, still on his meds, and on the road to recovery. He's learning how to be socially part of a family. He likes to snuggle up next to, Jubilee, his foster sister. Jubilee doesn't mind that he wants to share a bed with her instead of napping in his own bed.
